Methodology

One thing while reading this is that there isn’t necessarily a ‘best’ Chivalry 2 Class. Due to the nature of every ability having a role in the game, there will always be a point in taking every class in different scenarios. Furthermore, the best Chivalry 2 classes guide also structures every single class into a miniature Chivalry 2 Tier List, ranking every spec against each other.

Also, the most noteworthy thing is every subclass within each class shares the same stats. It does mean working out the best Chiavlary 2 classes is solely distinguished by usability and the strengths and weaknesses.

For those interested the Chivalry 2 Class stats are as follows.

The Best Archer subclass in Chivalry 2

An Archer is the master of ranged combat in Chivalry 2. Their main goal is to do moderate damage from afar, picking off enemy archers, or making life difficult for those who want to get in melee. However, there are a few weaknesses to the class or balancing to be aware of.

The first is they pretty much die in a melee, with their low health and stamina. It is going to take a skilled player to beat a melee opponents with an Archer’s secondary weapon. Secondly, an Archer needs some great aim to compensate for player movement and arrow drop off. Thirdly, they have low stamina and cannot repeatably spam well-charged arrows.

With their weakness set, a bad Archer can look fairly bad, although, a great archer can carry the team. It is easy to see why the Archer seems like one of the best Chivalry 2 Classes.

Archer Subclasses

Longbowman – Equips a Longbow with the ability to place a flaming brazier to ignite arrows for bonus damage. While it has greater range, it drains stamina quicker and loses accuracy the longer the arrow is drawn.

Crossbowman – The crossbow fires high damage dealing rounds that provide high blunt damage, which is great against armoured opponents like the Knight., but takes the longest to reload. Furthermore, their abilities allow them to place a Pavise Shield, which grants mobile cover for tactical deployment on the map.

Skirmisher – The hybrid Archer with semi-decent melee attributes. The class makes use of Javelins and throwing axes, and a light shield. Either weapon makes decent throwing weapons, with the other usable as melee weapons too. Their ability flatters this playstyle too, with the ability to replenish ammo for both weapons.

Archers Ranked

It is really hard to tell which is the best Archer subclass in Chivalry 2. All three offer great usability, but overall, the most effective of the lot is the Longbowman. It is the primary Archer playstyle that offers the most versatility.

The next best is the Crossbowman, which offers very unique counters and can pick off specific counters much more easily. However, the Pavise Shield gives them away much easier and their reload speed is a pain when melee opponents make their way over.

Finally, the Skirmisher fits a weird build. The throwing weapon playstyle is nice if it works, especially against charging players and supporting melee players. However,  the downside is that a good melee player will be able to spot the incoming ranged weapons and parry them mid-air. It certainly seems the weakest of the lot.

The Best Vanguard Subclass in Chivalry 2

Chivalry 2 Vanguard

The Vanguard is a fast-moving, long-lasting class, with a fairly decent health pool. The class is primarily one of the strongest in the game for putting out damage, though it does have the downside of easily overwhelmed outside of 1v1’s. For those who get good at fighting in the melee, or can isolate targets for the 1v1, the Vanguard will feel like one of the best classes in Chivalry 2.

One of the attractive elements of the Vanguard is its iconic Leaping Strike ability. The character jumps into the fight and slams down on the target. The move is brilliant when charging into battle on an opponent, but doing it into a crowd who see you coming is a way to get yourself fragged.

For those who want to excel in the class, a large amount of stamina and the room to get good at the game is a selling point. Learning how to get initiative and mastering the flow of combat will for sure lead to some stylistic plays as the Vanguard can outlast other classes.

Vanguard Subclasses

Devastator – The Dev is a two-handed wielding brute, with the option to use the maul to absolutely destroy unarmored heads and armoured opponents alike. Furthermore, they get access to a firebomb, which leaves a temporary pool of burning oil on the eh ground, dealing heavy ticking damage to those stood inside.

Raider – The Raider is unique in the sense they are one of the only classes that can use two primary weapons in their inventory. Therefore, the Raider is the most incredibly adaptive class in the game as both weapons can suit different niches and situations. As for their ability, they use a War Horn, which increases the health regen of all allies within range. Markers of those who need health appear above the heads of their characters before activating the Horn.

Ambusher – The Ambusher is the master flanker in Chivalry 2. Their unique perk is they get a 35% bonus damage to hitting enemies from behind, along with fast-hitting weapons to get the pressure on their opponents. Furthermore, they have several throwing weapons and a replenished ammo ability to site that fast-moving hybrid ranged and melee assassin.

Vanguard Ranked

By far the best of the bunch is the first subclass, the Devastator. The Devastator is by far the best of the three as it is the most straightforward and benefits the most out of getting good at melee fighting. Not to mention they have several of the best melee weapons in the game that will reward very good players. Just be careful of Archers and throwing weapons as they are the natural counter to this class, that and being bad at blocking, chambering, or parrying. Overall, they are by far one of the best Chivalry 2 Classes in the game, if not the best for more experienced players to the genre.

The next best is the Raider. The healing Horn is great for team players and the versatility of the two primary weapons allows them to adapt to any other melee class in the game. However, they lose that offensive playstyle that comes with the Devastator, which is where the class shines.

Finally, the Ambusher appears to be the worst. While its damage bonus is not bad, the difficulty is the playstyle simply has too many difficulties getting into a position to perform its role.

The Best Footman Subclass in Chivalry 2

The Footman is the resident support class in Chivalry 2. Their purpose is the use their bandages well, helping out the frontline with healing while holding their own in the melee. Likewise, they have a charge ability too, which launches themselves at an opponent and strikes them.

Although, the class is a mixed bag of tricks, so they are by far not one of the best Chivalry 2 classes. Although, since they have many different playstyles, there are certain niches this class fills every single game.

Footman Subclasses

Poleman – The poleman is the class that excels the most at reach, making them great point holders with their range and natural counters to horsemen.  Furthermore, they perform well in the charge too, with their long reach getting +25% damage when successfully landed compared to other charge classes. In addition, they can place spike traps and heal, making them great in so many situations.

Man at Arms – Men at Arms is one of the best duelists in the game. Their one-handed weaponry playstyle is matched with the lowest dash cooldown in the game. They can be tricky to deal with, and the shield allows them some survivability. Overall, very flexible frontliners.

Field Engineer – The role of the Field Engineer is specifically for team-based objective maps. Their perk is they deal bonus damage to structures, taking out enemy defences and objectives. Furthermore, they are the ultimate tactician, placing down walls and spike traps to control the flow of the game. As for their weapons, they use sledgehammers, which is nice against armoured opponents but they have nothing else to accompany them. therefore, avoid combat at all costs.

Footman Ranked

With the niches of the Footman, it is hard to rank the best Footmen subclass. However, we’ll give the victory to the Man at Arms. Their role as the agile melee damage dealer makes them better Ambushers, and the speed of their one-handers and shield combo can put down any slow and heavy classes like Knight and Vanguard. Although, if they fail to succeed they’ll surely falter.

However, if you want to support the team, then the other two Footmen subclasses are perfectly valid. The Field Engineer can support your troops with cover, setting up archers to succeed more. Based on this strategy alone, the Field Engineer is the best support class in the game, especially for the defence team. Furthermore, the spike traps make it so enemies need to monitor their charges more. Likewise, the Poleman’s reach can help lockdown sites and support a team to victory without looking the best on the leaderboard solely based on its range.

The Best Knight Subclass in Chivalry 2

Knight Class
The Knight is the most durable frontliner in Chivalry 2. Image via Torn Banner Studios.

The Knight is the most durable character on the battlefield. Their role in the fight is to last the longest, withstanding blows with shield and armour alike. While they take plenty of beatings, performing well on the class makes them an unkillable killing machine capable of flooring opponents with their charged spear move as well.

To excel as the Knight, players need to take damage and mitigate damage through their blocking. Mastering this is the art of the Knight, which is what makes them so good at their role.

Although, players need to take care of their movement speed and position, as that armour weighs them down. Players will find moving to reposition will take them a while, and entering charge mode takes a little longer and isn’t as fast as other Chivalry 2 Classes.

Knight Subclasses

Officer – The Officer is a versatile class, with many primary weapons to chose from. While they excel in the melee, they are equipped with throwing knives to help in other situations.  Like the Raider, their ability is an AOE War Horn heal. Overall, a very efficient frontliner.

Guardian – Guardians are equipped with a one-handed weapon, along with a large tower shield to withstand so much abuse. As for their ability, they can place a banner next to them. Allies stood inside gain passive healing, and it last until the enemies manage to cleave it down. Ideally, players can use this to bait enemies in, or completely lock down an area you want to contend.

Crusader – are a mixture of the vanguard’s different subclasses. They have two-handed, one-handed, and ranged weaponry, along with a firebomb ability. By default, these characters are incredibly hard to kill and are extremely offensive in their playstyle. Anyone who has great mechanics can reap the reward of their safety from health and armor and the various tools to kill baddies with.

Knights Ranked

Due to the nature of the Knight, they can either be extremely oppressive or impressive bulwarks on team objectives. Those who manage to grind the Knight out will unlock the Crusader and find their strengths are incredibly powerful. Therefore, they are the best Knight subclass in Chivalry 2.

On the other hand, the Guardian is the next best of the lot simply because it is an incredible team-based class and objective holder. Alternatively, the Officer does the same job in a slightly different playstyle.

Chivalry 2 Tier List

S Tier – Devastator, Crusader.

A Tier – Guardian, Raider, Longbowman, Man at Arms, Poleman.

B Tier – Crossbowman, Field Engineer, Officer.

C Tier – Ambusher, Skirmisher.

S Tier

Overall, we have broken down the four different classes in the game, along with their individual niches. With that said, for getting really good at the game and beating everyone, the Crusader and Devastator are clearly the two best Chivalry 2 Classes in the game. The Devastator tops the Chivalry 2 Class Tier List because it has access to some of the strongest melee weapons in the game. Likewise, they have access to some very situational weapons, so if there is someone better than them, they pick another weapon to beat them easily. On the other hand, the Crusader isn’t too far behind, having a strong array of weaponry, but won’t reach the same highs as the Devastator in theory.

A Tier

Next on the list is the A Tier choices. All the A Tier picks are perfectly strong on the battlefield and don’t require anywhere near as much skill as the S Tiers. The Longbowman is the best Archer with its most versatile kit, matched with the Man at Arms and Raider for the same reasons, albeit with different playstyles. Furthermore, the Poleman’s position as a support damage dealer with one of the best reaches in the game make it a strong contender for new or objective players. Finally, we have the Guardian, whose ability to deploy a healing banner that lasts until destroyed is a great tool for keeping the front alive or locking down part of the map.

B Tier

The B Tier are the balanced subclasses. The Crossbowman deals the most damage of the ranged classes, but has a long reload time. Requires more skill to play and stand out more with their Pavise Shield. Although, landing those headshots on every class guarantees a kill. See, clear strength; clear weaknesses.

Next up is the Officer, who is the weaker of the two-handed weapon users. They are much more durable than Vanguards, but don’t deal as much damage or have great a kit compared to their weaponry. Also, the Crusader has much more offensive tools than them. Meanwhile, their healing horn is not as effective as the Guardian’s healing Banner. The Officer is basically a nice entry point for two-handed users, being the balanced approach of them all.

On the other hand, the Field Engineer looks like the best support class, but their weapons are bad and require coordination, planning, map knowledge and ideally the defence based team to pull off properly. When used wrong, they feel like a severely handicapped Devastator.

C Tier

The two C Tier classes are the third subclasses of the Archer and Vanguard. The Ambusher plays like an Assassin, but getting flanks are rather impractical in Team-Based Modes. They might work fine on maps like The Pit and Tournament Grounds though, and their speed could catch someone off guard. On the other hand, the Skirmisher takes the low armour of the Archer into mid-range. Furthermore, their throwing weapons don’t make great melee weapons, so they lose to most melee classes. It is a weird playstyle that needs solid positioning to work properly.

Despite all of this, the game has so many different roles and niches that every class is fairly viable. So, if there is a role you like the most in team-based modes, then go ahead and master them, rather than trying to dominate individual fights. All classes are viable in the game, so really play whatever you want!
