As sure as brown trousers follow the sound of leaping Fiend, some measure of confirmation of a new Quake has appeared following the rumours circulating last week. Just found on the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) website is an entry for Quake, “a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of a soldier that travels through time to stop an evil force from destroying humanity.” While that could easily apply to the version of Quake released back in 1996 (or pretty much any game released in the 90s), this version of Quake is down for release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Yes, you read that right, Quake for the Nintendo Switch!

There’s no mention of when this new edition of Quake will appear, whether it’s a remaster, reboot, reimagining or so-called “Quake Revitalized”, but we can at least be fairly sure it’s a game that will be available rather than one that exists as part of a collective fever dream.

And, yes, in case you’re wondering, it has been rated Mature. It will have blood, gore and violence, which is a very good sign indeed.

We’ll know more about “Quake Revitalized” in a few hours when QuakeCon 2021 kicks off. In the meantime, let’s try and get our head around Quake existing for Nintendo Switch.

… Assuming this isn’t all some cruel hoax, Quake’s Switch release won’t be the first time a Quake game will have appeared on a Nintendo console. The original Quake did appear for N64 back in 1998, with the sequel arriving a year later when the world had moved on to Quake 3 Arena. Neither of them were in the same league as Doom 64 (despite being made by the same team), which makes any Quake Switch release all the more exciting.
