Whilst there is no secret recipe to being hugely successful at any major sport or esport other than sheer determination and hard work, coupled with talent, there are some basic things that you can do in order to improve aspects of your gameplay.
When you first play League of Legends, you will find that your game will be set up or preloaded with the default layout of keybindings and hotkeys, which are essentially the control settings for the game.
Keybindings and hotkeys in LoL dictate everything as far as gameplay is concerned, from character control to the ways in which you manipulate your champions and their abilities in teamfights and much more.
Ultimately, there is no correct way to set your keybindings and hotkeys in League as it is completely down to preference. The most classic example of this has been the distinction between those players who have chosen to use their Summoner Spell Flash key on F or D.
Having Flash on F or D will not affect the ways in which you are able to utilize the spell and neither key is superior or advantageous over the other, but there has long been a debate over which is conventionally the “right” key to place your Flash on.
As we’ve already mentioned, your keybindings’ setup is completely down to you and how you want to control the different aspects of your gameplay. But what we will mention in this article is a general suggestion of some of the most common setups for hotkeys and keybindings that are popular amongst members of the community, including your favorite pro players.
After all, we cannot promise that after redefining your keybindings’ setup that you will be on your way to Challenger, but there are some common trends amongst pro players that may be worth replicating if you do want to improve. After all, it is the way that the best players in the world play the game, so what would be the harm in copying them?
Here are some of the “best” and most useful keybindings and hotkey setups that we have found:
This is an absolute game-changer, especially for those of you who’ve been playing the game long enough to know the range and effectiveness of your favourite Champion’s abilities.
Enabling quick-casting means that you won’t have those big templates show up every time you want to use an ability. Instead, all you’ll have to do is point your mouse in the direction you want to use the ability and it’ll cast straight away.
Here’s how to get it setup:
- Press the [ESC] Key.
- You’ll be met with a page that lists all of your ability and item keys.
- Press either Quick Cast All or Normal Cast All and begin tweaking to your heart’s content.
- Once you’ve got the perfect setup, make sure you hit Okay in the bottom right corner as this’ll save your settings.
Pressing [Alt] + Key will automatically cast an ability on yourself. This saves you from having to locate yourself in the cluster of a teamfight, and prevents you accidentally targeting an enemy or ally.
It’s crucial you get used to this keybind on Champions that benefit from shields or heals in particular!
Right Clicking In The Shop
Instead of double-clicking to grab your gear, simply right click on it to purchase it instantly and save a bit of extra time in the process.
If you want to have the map awareness of a pro, then this one is key. Not only it is useful for you to have a keybinding that unlocks and locks your camera for you (mine is on Y which is the default key), but it is also extremely helpful to set your F1, F2, F3 and F4 keys to your allied champions.
You can do this in the hotkeys menu when selecting the “Camera Control” tab, which allows you to allocate a key of your choice to “Select ally 1” and so forth. This particularly helps junglers who need to constantly be aware of what is happening on the map and around them at all times.
The benefit of using this tool is that allows you to scan the areas of the map where your allies are in rapid succession as all you have to do is press the key that has been allocated to your ally, F1 to your team’s top for example, and your camera will instantly toggle focus on them once pressing and holding the key. Letting go of the key will refocus your camera back to you.
Auto Level Up
Pressing [Ctrl] + Spell Key will automatically level up that ability, which could make all the difference if you’re in a tense situation as you won’t have to move your mouse to the small levelling icon and waste time.
If the default keybind isn’t to your liking, you can rebind it to something else in the settings. Choose something that feels comfortable and intuitive.
Targeting Champions Only
Again, this one’s quite sneaky. The keys [`] and [~] allow you to target champions only, which is fantastic when it comes to tower-diving enemies, or facing off in a lane filled with creeps where accidentally clicking on anything but an enemy could spell disaster.
Rebinding this is well worth your while, and if you’ve got a mouse with a couple of extra buttons, go ahead and rebind it to one of them.
Finding Your Range
Pressing [A] will show your auto-attack radius, which is especially useful when you’re playing an unfamiliar champion and you’re not quite sure how much range you’ve got to play around with.
What’s more, you can use this key to get the most value of your auto-attacks by harassing enemies at the farthest possible point - Caitlyn players take note.
If you're having trouble seeking out an ally in the centre of a chaotic brawl, you can click on their portrait before activating your ability to ensure that the ability hits them instead of anyone else.
A key tool in farming and ensuring you do not wander into danger; the stop key is often overlooked by players. Automatically bound to S, the stop key is perfect to get in close and minimize the attack travel time when farming as a ranged champion.
also perfect for quickly canceling walking once an enemy appears, this key is something you will begin to utilize more as you progress in the rankings.
