Humankind is the latest 4X historical strategy game to take PC gaming fans by storm. The historical 4X promises many features that rewrite the genre entirely, attracting many players bored with the Civilization series to flock to what is Amplitude’s most ambitious title yet. One of the things they may have noticed is all the save settings and customization options. If you’re overwhelmed by the Humankind difficulty names or map generation settings, we will guide you through these uncharted waters.

New Game Settings

Whenever you create a new game, you will customize how you want the save to play in various ways. The first thing you do is decide how many AIs you want in the game. You can select some of the default avatars, or you could download your friend’s Humankind avatar to add to your game. Once that is settled, you can then set the size of the World you want.

  • Tiny –  2 competitors
  • Small –  4 competitors
  • Normal –  6 competitors
  • Large – 8 competitors
  • Huge – 10 competitors

We advise picking one of these settings depending on how many avatars you have chosen to be in your lobby. From there, you can modify the settings, like making chaotic world shapes, or modify the climate, water level, land surface area and more. You can even enable the option to create a ‘new world’ you can sail to and colonize as many European nations did in the age of exploration. The game also uses a seed system so that you can share map generation ideas with your friends.

Pace

The pace is the setting that completely changes the speed at which the game progresses. It scales all aspects of the game, including the time it takes to complete research, manage districts, how you earn stars, and more. For example, a Fast game will only need half the food and discoveries of a Normal speed game.

  • Blitz – 75 turns
  • Fast – 150 turns
  • Normal – 300 turns
  • Slow – 450 turns
  • Endless – 600 turns

Difficulty

Difficulty is broken down into seven different settings, each translating to a difficulty you’ll relate to from other strategy games.

  • Hamlet – Very Easy
  • Town – Easy
  • Metropolis – Normal
  • Nation – Hard
  • Empire – Very Hard
  • Civilization – Nearly Impossible
  • Humankind – Extreme

Every Humankind difficulty greatly changes the rate you acquire resources. For example, having a character explore a discovery in the Neolithic or Ancient era can lead to more or less science, food, influence, or other resources depending on your chosen difficulty. Not to mention the AI has a much easier or harder time beating you in a fight. You can also enable or disable the Peaceful Mode option, which affects whether the AI competitors can declare war or fight other players.
