Geoff Keighley had several Q1 2022 surprises in store for the intrepid gamers watching Gamescom Opening Night Live, but the most unexpected game announcement might have been Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

Midnight Suns is developed by Firaxis (the studio behind the beloved XCOM strategy series) and is a “tactical RPG” based on the beloved dark-and-edgy superhero team comic books of the same name.

The RPG game’s story will be loosely based on the 1990s Marvel crossover arc Rise of the Midnight Sons, a story where subversive paramilitary extremist group HYDRA summon Lilith, Mother of Demons. Lilith is a bit much for The Avengers —Captain America, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, Iron Man and Wolverine in this adaptation— and they decide to call in a group of the best supernatural experts.

Robbie Reyes (the newest Ghost Rider), Blade, Magik and Nico Minoru were shown to be on the team in the trailer, but 2K promises that the game will feature 12 playable comic book heroes at launch. Around 20 heroes have been a part of the Midnight Sons (as they are known in Marvel’s comic book universe, also known as Earth-616) so there are a lot of characters that could show up, but we think it’s safe to expect appearances from popular team members Iron Fist (who had a Netflix show), Moon Knight (who has a Disney+ series on the way) and Michael Morbius (who is about to appear in a feature film) before the game releases next year.

As well as 12 playable comic book characters, Midnight Suns also has a create-a-character feature. The player will also take on the role of The Hunter, a new supernatural hero that can be customised both in terms of their moves and their overall appearance.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns will arrive on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC stores in March 2022.
