The pay-off for these tricky passages of play is that the narrative contains some interesting twists, with former enemies becoming allies and a role reversal late on that breaks a stereotypical man-rescues-woman mould. In addition, as the game seldom holds your hand (unless to crush it) you feel that you’ve triumphed when you reach each level’s exit (even on the 27^th time of trying…).

So, yes, The Immortal is tough, sometimes frustratingly so, but its narrative and well balanced brutal combat and devious puzzles suffice to reward your perseverance. A gem, then, albeit an unpolished one.
