The game’s menu offers a pretty standard array of option. The single player game is where most players will start first, and after choosing the appropriate difficulty level (may I suggest ‘Slick Sleeve’), the player is given the option of selecting their fighter plane of choice, from the Lightning, Mosquito and Shinden, each having its own levels of health, speed, power and missile. Now my winged weapon of doom is, by default, the Mosquito – fast, good power and a damn fine looking lady.
Tapping the fire button sees a single shot fired up the screen – the quicker you tap the more bullets travel north. Holding the fire key down for second or so releases a bolt of fire which to be fair has little more impact that the single fire, so rather pointless in execution.
As each level loads (there are five in total), a picture of the level’s bad boy boss is shown. For level 1 we have Bodan, a super flying fortress with gun turrets in every nook and cranny. Before introducing him to the wrath of your armament though, you have to take on wave upon wave of enemy planes, gun turrets, fire breathing tanks and ground to air missile launchers. More fun than it sounds.
Shooting down a wave of Red Barons sees either a power-up icon float around the screen that, once collected, provides enhanced guns, bombs or even lasers (a somewhat futuristic weapon for your 1940’s craft), a number of medals that can be collected for extra points or an extra life. Pick your power ups carefully, however – strategy is the key here.
