Lolcats are one of those things that could only really make it big on the internet. A bizarre photo-captioning frenzy based around pictures of Cats. It’s not something your Grandmother would understand.
LolCaptions takes the core features of that frenzy and throws it into a party game. Back before the internet existed, people used to play these sort of games with their families and friends, games like Chirades and Balderdash. This is the internet equivalent.
With a group of like-minded friends, the fun that can be had here is amazing. Even with strangers, the bizarre captions that people come up with can often be inadvertantly funny, if not outright hilarious. The idea is this: A picture appears, you have 30 seconds or so to think of a caption. Players then vote on their favourite captions, the one with the most votes wins (You can’t vote for your own, obviously, you loser). Simple as that.
5 - The Last Stand
"Braaains, braaaains!" - Zombies love Thunderbirds.
The Last Stand is a game with bags of atmosphere. From the blood soaked battlefields you defend (initially) on your lonesome against a hideous Zombie horde, to the wonderfully written diaries, and time-management details, this game has clearly had a lot of care poured into it.
You start off simply defending your base, armed only with a Handgun. Once you’ve fended off the Zombie onslaught, you’re given a time management screen. You have to put time into fixing your defences, searching for survivors and searching for weapons.
If you don’t fix your base, you’re leaving yourself open to a quick exit a-la Zombie food. If you don’t search for survivors, you won’t have anyone to help you kill off the horde, or to help fix your base in the first place (thus saving you time). If you don’t search for weapons, well, you’ll be left with your Handgun. Not the best weapon when faced with an army of undead.
Everything is well paced. Once you get the time balancing right, the game is a veritable walk in the park, but no less enjoyable. When played on Kongregate, the extra badges and awards for headshots and game completion add a little something extra to the game, but overall it’s a wonderful effort and another time-wasting beauty.
