5. Call of Duty 4
You’ve got a gun, you point it at foreigners for a bit, your squad goes home victorious to their loving wife and children (well, apart from the unfortunate few who made the mistake of mentioning their loving wife and children). In the past if you were playing as a U.S. marine in a first person shooter then chances are you’d know exactly what to expect. Call of Duty 4 however turned the whole cliché on its head when it unexpectedly decided to reward your heroic efforts to save a downed helicopter pilot by destroying your entire squad in one fell swoop.
Not even visiting Dunstable could prepare a gamer for a scene such as this.
Flipping the mood from Hoo-ha to Hoo-arrgh within the space of seconds, watching the shockwave of a nuclear blast rushing towards your escaping chopper was nothing short of jaw-dropping. It was the aftermath rather than the blast however which many of us found so chilling. Still in a first person perspective you were given a few moments in which to drag yourself out of the wreckage, the sounds of your own fading heartbeat and troubled breathing having suddenly replaced the cries of your gung-ho squaddies. Falling gracelessly to the ground as you pulled yourself from the back of the helicopter your vision became blurred as you tried to maintain consciousness, granting you a brief glimpse of the surrounding fallout before your heartbeat inevitably gave up, unable to avoid this terrible fate. Unexpectedly harrowing and yet ultimately beautiful. Gripping stuff.
