Motion Controls
Posted by Matt Lees, 226 days ago Jan 06, 2009

It now seems that the Xbox 360 is looking to introduce its own motion sensing control system at some point soon (We at GV get the feeling it might be introduced for use with Banjo 3) and whilst a year ago I’d have happily stood up and pointed the copy-cat finger at Microsoft, with the way things have been going I can honestly say I think it’s some of the best news I’ve heard this year. The Wii is certainly a fantastic little system for what it provides, but after years of defending the system from sceptics I’m sad to say it’s time for me to switch sides. Sure, it’s without a doubt the most important games console ever released, but will it ever really provide the sense of immersion gamers would like to see from motion control? I don’t think it will.

You may disagree at this point certainly, but hear me out on this.

Publishers originally panic-produced roughly made titles, a knee-jerk response to having realised they’d made a mistake putting all their eggs in the High-Def basket. These rushed games are unpolished and simple; this is unavoidable considering the timescale. Six months on these quickly produced games still seem to be selling reasonably well, with critical opinion playing a seemingly smaller part than usual in this department. Because the market is so oversaturated with competition it’s risky to spend too much money making one game, and this risk is exaggerated by the fact that the majority of Wii consumers aren’t gamers - they don’t read about games and they don’t really know anything about them - the effect of critical acclaim on sales being  almost entirely negated.

I dunno, I think Nintendo is actually expanding the range of interaction with the Wii with WiiFit and there are bound to be a lot of third party announcements for the Wiifit board this year, some are already known (a snowboarding game, the next Raving Rabbits etc.)  Motion control is integral to the Wii so support will continue, if we see motion control on the 360 its an add-on peripheral, and we all know how those do in sales and subsequent third party support.

The concept is sound but the implementation is too imprecise.  Games that should work like Trauma Center are woefully inaccurate compared to pin point accuracy of the DS version.

Also every Wii games seems to have to have Wiimote support yet not all game types actually benefit from it and some are decidely worse off for it.
