Peripherals have always been a double edged sword: Whilst they may well add a new gameplay gimmick or a heightened sense of immersion often there’s a hefty price to pay for this luxury, and this cost has been enough to put off all but a few affluent game collectors or sports enthusiasts. Light guns have just about managed over the years but up until fairly recently it wasn’t uncommon to see boxed up fishing rod peripherals gathering dust in Woolworths, whilst titles like Samba de Amigo never stood a chance. This is all changing however, whether you’re a serious gamer deciding on which items of furniture you’ll be able to live without in order to squeeze Rock Band into your living room or an overzealous parent buying chunks of plastic for your kids to clip onto their Wiimote, peripherals are starting to gain some serious ground in terms of people actually forking out hard earned cash.

The main issue people tend to take with peripheral-based games is for obvious reasons the rather steep costs that tend to be associated; those of us who’ve been gaming for years tend to have defined our own little benchmarks about how much we’re willing to fork out for a game. With the market being flooded with such a large number of truly excellent games those of us who don’t have disposable incomes often have to make tough decisions on which titles to grab and which to miss out on, and most of us have learnt to base these decisions on value for money. With traditional games this is easy: A short but intense story driven game might still weigh up as good value for money when compared to the costs of going to the cinema, whilst a solidly built football game may well provide months of post-pub entertainment. Even World of Warcraft can easily be justified because of its longevity - if you play it enough you’re essentially keeping yourself entertained at the price of just couple of pennies an hour (mind you, that’s only the financial cost).

WARNING: Do not underestimate Yoga.
Your thighs will not thank you for your skepticism.

The main criticisms of Wii Fit from gamers tend to be based on the fact that using this value system doesn’t quite work in the same way. It’s not going to entertain you in the same way a film would, it’s not a terribly social experience, and unless you’re the lovechild of Mr. Motivator you’re going to struggle to really ’session it’ in the same way you might with other games. Because of this an awful lot of gamers have written it off as being super-casual fodder, and to a certain extent this has been influenced by the manner in which the gaming press has reviewed it. At risk of sounding pretentious I can’t help but feel that judging Wii Fit using the same criteria used for reviewing GTA IV just seems a little... ludicrous. Having used it quite regularly it doesn’t really seem fair to even classify Wii Fit as being a game, the least complicated explanation I can muster would be to say that Wii Fit acts as a motivational tool which spices up an otherwise rather dreary element of real life. Wii Fit is in my mind one of the most revolutionary programs even, quite simply because it seems in part to be a reply to a question i’ve been asking myself for years: "Wouldn’t real life be more fun if it was like a videogame?". The answer so far it seems, is hell yes.

 Our Rating for Wii Fit
8.0
Fun Factor
Hardly a riot, but you’d be hard-pressed to find better reasons to run on the spot.
8.0
Graphics
Clean, bright, simple, and polished. Everything you’d expect.
8.0
Sound
Minimal but functional. Personal coach’s voice mostly avoids being condescending or irritating, which is an achievement in itself.
2.0
Multiplayer
Two player jogging is a fun gimmick, but other than this there is no multiplayer component.
9.9
Single Player
Without a doubt a purely solo experience. Get some time to yourself and knuckle down: you’ll soon feel the difference.
8.0
Controls
For some events it’s impossible for the game to mark you accurately, but by and large the balance board works exactly in the manner you’d expect.
9.0
Overall
If however you’re a skeptical gamer who could afford to lose a few pounds then drop the attitude and open your wallet. If you like games and want a better body, Wii Fit is essential.

Definately picking it up but I’ve heard it has a few design flaws - notably the lack of ability to set up a training routine...meaning that after each exercise you have to pick up the wiimote and navigate a bunch of menus to start the next, manually.  Bit of an oversight by Nintendo there.   Hopefully they’ll add to it over time.

A very good review and from someone who is using it to shed a few pounds, £70.00 is a steel. Yes the hardware can become a little frustating at times (though usually down to the floor quality), all in all a very worthwhile investment which removes the need to becoming a couch potato.
