Aces of the Galaxy hit Xbox Live some days ago with a muted fanfare. This is not to say this game is below par though and should not be overlooked by those with more than a slight affection to the old school shooter.
Developed by Sierra Online, a subsiduary company of Vivendi Games, the first thing that pleased was the game’s title music – a soothing electronic number reminiscent of the musical scores on the Commodore Amiga. It’s a fanfare presented to the player repeatedly throughout the game as a reward for completing each level.
The main menu offers the usual familiar Live options; Solo, Multiplayer, Leaderboards, Achievements and Help.
Graphical style - somewhat Homeworld, very pretty
Solo Game takes the player into the single player campaign. On choosing the difficulty level and ship type, the game introduces the Skurgian Warriors – a race intent on destroying the human scum that is the player – how rude. Skipping the somewhat weak transcript sees battle against the ugly alien beasts commence.
The game is an on the rails shooter meaning the player has no control of their route through each level; the game takes control of the steering wheel, clutch and gear stick as the player controls a cursor to target the myriad of aliens that appear on the screen from the top, left, right and from behind.
